What is LIRA?

LIRA Logo

LIRA is a student organisation that is designed to increase awareness and understanding of the world of international relations. LIRA seeks to provide a more interactive experience for students beyond La Trobe University’s academic structure of lectures and tutorials.

LIRA aims to provide all students with an interest in international relations and politics with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and become more engaged in the university experience through both social and extra-curricular academic forums. LIRA also acts as a bridge between students and faculty, as well as promoting the study of International Relations to potential students.

LIRA is an apolitical organisation, committed to providing balanced and unbiased information and opinions via the events we run and with which we become involved.

LIRA in 2011

Welcome to 2011!

LIRA is set for a big year, and already plenty has been underway.

There has been a shake-up of the Executive as many have graduated or are off on exchange. I, Tyler Cameron, have replaced Tia Spanos as President for the remainder of the term. Recently, Jackson Dyer was also appointed as IT Officer. Our lack of IT Officer also explains why this website has not been updated in some time.

An action-packed O-Week saw us take (some may say ‘lead astray’) the new IR students to the Eagle Bar for a Meet & Greet with the LIRA Executive and it was a good chance for them to get to know each other.

In the first week of classes we put on a free barbeque for the politics students. Despite the weather we had over 100 hungry politics-minds turn out and make the most of the free feed and music. Tim and Greg slaved behind the grill whilst Mientje started rounding up interest for this years AMUNC!

2011 also saw the inception of the LIRA 1st-year Bar Hop which took enthusiastic 1st years (actually, students from all years, including Alumni) down Brunswick St to some fine establishments. This was the first large social event of the year and it proved to be a success and something we wish to develop further.

Just last week we had Olivia Ball from Amnesty International come and speak about NGOs’ role in international relations, current Amnesty International projects, and how to go about getting involved in that industry. This was just the first of many thought-provoking academic events to be held throughout the year.

With the annual LIRA Trivia Night on the horizon along with the fast-approaching AMUNC to be held in the nation’s capital be sure to keep an eye out so you don’t miss out on more great LIRA events.

Q and A Student-lecturer Discussion: Review

On Wednesday 6th October, LIRA hosted a panel discussion that explored the implications of the 2010 Federal election for the Australian political system. We were privileged to have four politically knowledgeable panelists, namely, Robert Manne, Dennis Altman, Michael O’Keefe and Russel Marks. The discussion was enlivened and various topics were explored such as the ideologies of the political parties, the rise of the Greens and the future of Australian politics. Tia Spanos and Patrick Moffat Stokes proved to be skilled student moderators who provided poignant questions. Overall, the event was very successful and we would like to thank those who attended. We look forward to hosting a similar event next year.
