La Trobe @ WorldMUN Taipei Report

WorldMUN 2010 Logo

Earlier this month we publicised information about the 3 La Trobe students and LIRA members, Raphael Haycraft, Tom Day, and Greg Healy, who were representing Australia at the 2010 Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) in Taiwan. We are happy to announce the great success achieved by our La Trobe LIRA members, two of whom won Diplomacy Awards (Best Delegate Awards). Of the 64 Australians present at 2010 WorldMUN, Raphael Haycraft and Greg Healy were the only two to win the highly coveted awards, demonstrating to universities in Australia and around the world the abilities and talents of La Trobe’s students. The Harvard and Taiwan University hosts put on an impressive and professional WorldMUN this year, and an equally impressive Social and Cultural events program. Attendees heard keynote addressed from Taiwanese President, Ma Ting-jeou and attended functions at Taipei’s premier cultural locations, including Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Chiang Kai-Shek Hall, and Freedom Square. Our La Trobe attendees have noted that while WorldMUN was a great display of the possibilities and scale possible at MUN’s around the world, they look forward to MUN’ing with La Trobe delegates this July at the Asia Pacific Model UN Conference (AMUNC) in Sydney, and hope delegates there keep in mind that this year’s AMUNC could see them attending 2011 Harvard WorldMUN too.

LIRA is pleased to report that La Trobe’s delegates represented at the 2010 Taipei WorldMUN have spent the last week debating, arguing and drafting policy, negotiating over a drink or two, and experiencing the city of Taipei to its fullest. The schedule is demanding, but the hosts of WorldMUN 2010 have ensured it is not all work and no play, with excursions to the best of Taipei’s landmarks, and keynote addresses from many distinguished world actors, including the President of Taiwan; Mr Ma Ying-Jeow. LIRA wishes them the best for the remainder of the conference, and thanks La Trobe University for their support of this year delegation. If you’re interested in attending WorldMUN in the future, be sure to apply for AMUNC 2010 in Sydney in July, where LIRA and La Trobe will take more than 40 delegates!

Last year LIRA organised a 25 member delegation to the 2009 Asia Pacific Model UN Conference. This conference, held in Brisbane in early July, was a great experience enjoyed by all delegates that attended. In 2010 LIRA is again organising a delegation, and we hope this year our delegation can challenge for the best delegation award. This year’s conference is being hosted by Sydney University, in Sydney, and promises to be even bigger and better than last year.

We highly recommend that members (that means you) apply for this amazing experience. It is an opportunity to flex your diplomatic muscle whilst enjoying a range of amazing social events. LIRA will be representing Iran, Argentina, Ghana, Sudan and Indonesia.

LIRA has already submitted its application for countries and we are now waiting to receive confirmation of which countries and which committees our delegates will be representing at this year’s conference. We highly recommend that members (that means you) apply for this amazing experience. It is an opportunity to flex your diplomatic muscle whilst enjoying a range of amazing social events. LIRA will be releasing our application forms for the delegation as soon as we are made aware of the number of positions we have available in our delegation while for those of you who have had experience at these types of conferences there is a dual application process required should you wish to take part in a special application committee. Mini-Model United Nations at La Trobe

As many of you will know, LIRA sent a delegation of 25 members to the week long 2009 Asia Pacific Model United Nations Conference, held in Brisbane, earlier this year. It was a great experience and all who participated had a great time while also learning a great deal about their committee’s topics.

LIRA is proud to be able to bring that experience to La Trobe. We will be hosting our very own Model United Nations Conference shortly after the exam period and we invite you to attend. The event will be a single day event and will be held on the 2nd of December.

This conference will be an excellent chance for La Trobe students to practice and learn the art of diplomacy and it promises to be a lot of fun to boot. LIRA is currently taking expressions of interest so we can determine the size and number of committees that we will have on the day. If this event sounds like the kind of thing that you would be interested in then please contact Raphael so that we can then send you further details about the topics and committees that will be on offer.

SydMUN – Next on the Model United Nation’s Circuit

Earlier this year LIRA organised a team of twenty five delegates to take part in the annual Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference. This year it was held in Brisbane where participants gained invaluable diplomatic experience debating a range of topics during the conference and then got to know their fellow delegates a little better at an array of social events in the evenings. It was a great experience which was enjoyed by all attendees.

Between 4th -6th December this year is the next conference on the Model United Nations circuit, SydMUN. With a number of exciting committee topics and with great social events SydMUN is an excellent opportunity to strut your diplomatic stuff at a Model United Nations Conference. Those of you that excel may well win one of the coveted delegate and diplomat awards which look great to prospective employers in your future careers as ambassadors. These experiences may even lead to your selection in the Australian WorldMUN team. This year the WorldMUN Conference was held in The Netherlands, with two people from La Trobe attending. Next year it will be in Taiwan and we are hoping for an even bigger La Trobe contingency.

There are no team delegations at SydMUN so LIRA won’t be organising a delegation for this event, but those of you that are interested in attending can register directly with the host, Sydney University, through their website www.usydunsociety.org/?q=sydmun.  Registration has already opened and spots are limited so we recommend you hurry in order to get the committee most suited to your interests.

AMUNC Report

From the 11th to the 18th of July of the winter holidays just gone, twenty-five LIRA members from La Trobe University attended the 2009 Asia Pacific Model UN in Brisbane. It was a great success and an achievement for LIRA and all delegates in attendance! After making their way to Brisbane, the 25 delegates from La Trobe suited up, and went to work representing Mexico and the United Kingdom on topics such as Climate Change, North Korea, Refugees, Human Rights and the GFC. The program was rigorous and demanding, with tough competition from other universities and little time to catch up on sleep after long nights negotiating over a drink or two.

When the conference came to a close, it was clear that all LIRA delegates had done an excellent job, learning a lot about themselves, their talents, the UN, while managing to make a lot of friends from La Trobe, around Australia, and abroad! LIRA would again like to extend a thanks to the Politics Program for financially supporting La Trobe students in covering the cost of the conference.
