Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Event Report: Chris Roche of Oxfam

Chris Roche of OxfamChris Roche gave an interesting talk on some of the challenges facing NGOs last week. Chris is the Director of Development Effectiveness at Oxfam and also is at the Centre for Human Security at La Trobe.

Chris spoke of the challenges faced by NGOs and some of the emerging trends which contribute to Oxfam’s mission of overcoming inequality including the emergence of the G20. The emergence of this new body offers hope for an increase in global leadership and governance which is more representative of the reality of the world. He wasn’t too confidant of UNSC reform.

He identified three ways people can get their first steps into NGOs including:

  • Volunteering: Getting out there with Australian Volunteers International, Australian Youth Ambassadors Development etc and getting into the system from there.
  • Research and Post-Graduate Research: Your expertise may be sought out.
  • Joining an NGO in another role (Marketing, Fundraising etc) and moving towards policy work.

Competition is intense but he also suggested that you can always start your own NGO. Don’t necessairly be constrained by what is there but invent the future.

Thanks to Chris for coming to speak and we hope to bring you other speakers in the future. A transcript will be available on the website shortly.

La Trobe @ WorldMUN Taipei Report

WorldMUN 2010 Logo

Earlier this month we publicised information about the 3 La Trobe students and LIRA members, Raphael Haycraft, Tom Day, and Greg Healy, who were representing Australia at the 2010 Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) in Taiwan. We are happy to announce the great success achieved by our La Trobe LIRA members, two of whom won Diplomacy Awards (Best Delegate Awards). Of the 64 Australians present at 2010 WorldMUN, Raphael Haycraft and Greg Healy were the only two to win the highly coveted awards, demonstrating to universities in Australia and around the world the abilities and talents of La Trobe’s students. The Harvard and Taiwan University hosts put on an impressive and professional WorldMUN this year, and an equally impressive Social and Cultural events program. Attendees heard keynote addressed from Taiwanese President, Ma Ting-jeou and attended functions at Taipei’s premier cultural locations, including Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Chiang Kai-Shek Hall, and Freedom Square. Our La Trobe attendees have noted that while WorldMUN was a great display of the possibilities and scale possible at MUN’s around the world, they look forward to MUN’ing with La Trobe delegates this July at the Asia Pacific Model UN Conference (AMUNC) in Sydney, and hope delegates there keep in mind that this year’s AMUNC could see them attending 2011 Harvard WorldMUN too.
