A number of executive members will be leaving LIRA next semester and so it is a perfect opportunity for those who have been thinking about getting involved to volunteer. Although there will be an election for positions we’d like to be able to pass on the knowledge before people leave the country for exchanges. We’re looking for people to fill the following positions at the moment (but anyone can nominate for any position at the upcoming election).
- IT Officer – Responsible for making sure all the online services and e-mail run smoothly (2-3 hours a week)
- Publicity Officer – Responsible for creating our posters and organising the publicity for events on- and offline.
- Finance – Managing LIRA finances
These are just the immediate roles we need to fill but you are welcome to nominate for any executive position. E-mail Raphael for more information.

Prof. Joe Camilleri and Prof. Jim Falk launched their followup to The End of Sovereignty? at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre at the University of Melbourne on Tuesday. Worlds in Transition It was an entertaining evening and was well attended by many notable personalities including Parliamentarians, current and former faculty of La Trobe and the University of Melbourne and a number of students.
Prof. Stuart Mcintyre and former High Court Justice Michael Kirby gave entertaining and illuminating insights into the book. Summarising the book is a little outside of the scope of this newsletter but we encourage you to have a look at the worlds-in-transition.com website which has a good summary of their arguments and areas for discussion.

“Worlds in Transition is an extraordinary book, the most comprehensive and profound assessment of the overall challenge of global governance yet available. Its ambitious scope extends beyond normal social science to consider the nature and limits of human adaptive capacities strained to the breaking point by the interplay of climate change, globalization, and a fragmented world order.”
– Richard Falk, Albert G. Milbank Professor Emeritus, International Law, Princeton University

Earlier this month we publicised information about the 3 La Trobe students and LIRA members, Raphael Haycraft, Tom Day, and Greg Healy, who were representing Australia at the 2010 Harvard World Model United Nations (WorldMUN) in Taiwan. We are happy to announce the great success achieved by our La Trobe LIRA members, two of whom won Diplomacy Awards (Best Delegate Awards). Of the 64 Australians present at 2010 WorldMUN, Raphael Haycraft and Greg Healy were the only two to win the highly coveted awards, demonstrating to universities in Australia and around the world the abilities and talents of La Trobe’s students. The Harvard and Taiwan University hosts put on an impressive and professional WorldMUN this year, and an equally impressive Social and Cultural events program. Attendees heard keynote addressed from Taiwanese President, Ma Ting-jeou and attended functions at Taipei’s premier cultural locations, including Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall, Chiang Kai-Shek Hall, and Freedom Square. Our La Trobe attendees have noted that while WorldMUN was a great display of the possibilities and scale possible at MUN’s around the world, they look forward to MUN’ing with La Trobe delegates this July at the Asia Pacific Model UN Conference (AMUNC) in Sydney, and hope delegates there keep in mind that this year’s AMUNC could see them attending 2011 Harvard WorldMUN too.
