LIRA is in its infant stage, born out of a desire to make the International Relations degree at Latrobe more interactive and holistic. We aim to not only provide exciting and enjoyable social occasions for IR students, we also place a high priority on challenging and expanding students understanding and engagement with the issues the world is currently facing. This will be done through a number of forums, from guest speakers to seminars, publications and simulated scenarios.
While the organisation is small and new it has big dreams of creating networks among current students, potential students, staff members, potential employers, regional and topical experts that allow exchange of information and ideas, not only enhancing the university experience, but also creating a environment in which grand ideas and dreams are encouraged, discussed and acted apon.
Our mission statement reads as follows;
To enhance and facilitate the study of international relations, and any other related studies, by providing academic and professional development as well as providing a positive on-campus experience through social events and networking opportunities.
The objectives of LIRA fall into four categories, each explained briefly below, for a more comprehensive explanation please refer to the constitution.
Academia – LIRA is committed to creating an environment and experience for students that fosters great understanding and engagement with international relations issues and topics. This will be achieved by creating opportunities outside of the structured programs of lectures and tutorials, including guest speakers, opportunities to engage with present and past students, and relevant course information and advice.
Careers – LIRA will provide information and facilitate events that will enable international relations students and those interested in such careers, to be empowered with the knowledge and ability to pursue the careers they desire.
Activities – LIRA will organise and host social events that allow IR students to engage with each other, across year levels, as well as engaging with faculty staff and alumni. These events will cultivate an environment conducive to sharing ideas and interests.
University – LIRA will act as a liaison between administration and faculty of International Relations and members of LIRA, with the aim of making the university experience the most enjoyable and problem free as it can be for all parties involved in IR at Latrobe.
