LIRA is a student organisation that is designed to increase awareness and understanding of the world of international relations. LIRA seeks to provide a more interactive experience for students beyond La Trobe University’s academic structure of lectures and tutorials.
LIRA aims to provide all students with an interest in international relations and politics with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and become more engaged in the university experience through both social and extra-curricular academic forums. LIRA also acts as a bridge between students and faculty, as well as promoting the study of International Relations to potential students.
LIRA is an apolitical organisation, committed to providing balanced and unbiased information and opinions via the events we run and with which we become involved.
LIRA’s annual politics dinner is on again this year, and we’ve changed it up a little bit with a new venue! This year we’ll be at the Northcote Town Hall on November 23rd. A mere $50 gets you 2 courses plus canapés, a hilarious performance from political comedian Toby Halligan and so much beer and wine. It’s a fantastic opportunity to mix with like-minded students from your own and other year levels, plus get to know the staff of the Politics & International Relations program in a less formal setting.
Tickets are available at the Politics office (Social Sciences building, level 3) or online here, and you can find the event on Facebook over this way! Be sure to like us in order to stay up to date with what we’re up to over the Summer and in the new year!
When: Wed 23rd November
Where: Northcote Town Hall, High St Northcote
Time: 6pm-10pm
Please feel free to email president@lira.org.au with any queries about the event!
Raphael Haycraft has been with the La Trobe International Relations Association since the beginning, as a founding member. In this time, he has held the roles of Treasurer, Vice-President and is the outgoing Careers Officer. He has been enormously influential in the development of LIRA and has fostered a culture of support and friendship among the students of International Relations at La Trobe University. He has encouraged successive executives to be bold and work for the society and pursue new goals and directions.
Raphael has also been heavily involved with the development of a Model United Nations (MUN) community at La Trobe and more widely in the state and country, having attended a number of regional and global conferences and been one of the driving forces behind 2010′s inaugural VicMUN.
The 2011 LIRA executive voted in its final meeting to make Raphael an Honorary Lifetime Member of the club, and thanks him for his years of hard work. We hope he will stay on in whatever capacity he is able.
A big congratulations to everybody who won the election! This time around we had a record participation in voting, and we’re very happy to welcome a number of people to the executive who haven’t previously been involved. Remember, for everybody who missed out on a position this time around, elections will be held for the 2012 academic year in just another few months, and everybody is encouraged to get involved with LIRA in a voluntary capacity!
The results of the election are as follows:
PRESIDENT:
Mientje Bramham
VICE-PRESIDENT:
Emily Hesline
SOCIAL EVENTS OFFICER:
Alex Hurcombe
ACADEMIC EVENTS OFFICER:
Nick Hansen
PUBLICITY & PUBLICATIONS OFFICER:
Pip Robertson
I.T. OFFICER:
Gary Dickson
CAREERS OFFICER:
Madeleine McCormack
SCHOOL LIAISON:
Tia Spanos
FUNDRAISING OFFICER:
Erin Meeking
A huge thank-you goes out to the outgoing executive, who have taken LIRA to new heights in the last 12 months and set a standard of leadership that will be exceptionally difficult to match!
Waffle Wednesdays are on for the rest of semester! We’re selling delicious vegan waffles and crepes every second Wednesday in the Agora from midday until we sell out (and we do every week!). So make sure you come by and get a waffle before they go. Crepes are $2 each, one waffle for $3 or two for $5! Your choice of spreads!
You can also find general information about LIRA happenings at the waffle stand.
If you want to build your CV and network with other like-minded students but you don’t have the time to become an executive member, why not put your name down on the volunteer list? We’re collecting names of members who are open to helping with running events such as the Waffle Tuesdays, the LIRA Trivia Night or organising the annual Politics Dinner. If you are interested in helping, send an email with your contact details to Jess at socialevents@lira.org.au. We will also have sign-up sheets for our volunteer list at the Waffle stand in the agora.
Are you not getting any news or event emails from LIRA? Send us an email with your student ID and email address so you can stay in the loop.
It’s election time!
LIRA is running its elections soon.
The poll will be open for voting online from 12:00am Wednesday August 24th until 11:59pm on Tuesday August 30th.
LIRA is currently seeking applications for positions for the election. Any La Trobe student can stand for a position – you don’t have to be an International Relations or Politics student!
Executive members meet once a week for one hour on campus.
They manage various areas of LIRA’s activities from social events to finance or IT. We encourage all to stand. See the attached document for a list of descriptions for the various executive positions.
The current LIRA executive members are making themselves available to all students who are interested in finding out more about the upcoming elections, LIRA activities or general information.
Thursday August 11th
Our president and Deputy Socials officer will be available after the POL1EEH lecture on Thursday afternoon (tomorrow). If anyone has questions about the elections or general LIRA activities they are encouraged to see Tyler and Jess after the lecture in WLT.
Tuesday August 16th
During the next Waffle Tuesday in the Agora LIRA executive will be hanging about at the waffle stand and at Caffeine for all students to ask questions about the club or the election. Executive members will be there from 11am-3pm. Just head to the Waffle stand and ask away!
International Peace & Security Institute (IPSI) and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies(SAIS) are cooperating on a large-scale symposium this winter that may be of interest to La Trobe University students looking for practical skills and training to complement their classroom learning. We have funding forpartial scholarships for well-qualified students from “developed” countries.
The 2010 Bologna, Italy Symposium on Conflict Prevention, Resolution, and Reconciliation will be held from June 19 – July 17 at the SAIS Bologna Center. In addition to intensive training on international mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution and transferable SAIS academic credit, students will learn the nuts and bolts of peace and security architecture, early warning systems, peacebuilding through social entrepreneurship, genderand conflict, negotiating with rebel groups, etc. from the field’s leading academics and practitioners, including Gareth Evans. You can visit www.IPSInstitute.org/bologna to learn more.
IPSI is accepting applications until May 12.
