What is LIRA?

LIRA Logo

LIRA has at its heart, a desire to make the international relations degree at Latrobe more interactive, and a recognition that there are many ways to engage in the world of international relations outside of the structure of lectures and tutorials.

LIRA aims to provide ways that IR students can enhance their knowledge, understanding and effectiveness through both social and further academic forums. LIRA also acts as a bridge between students and faculty, as well as promoting the study of international relations to potential students.

LIRA is an apolitical organisation, committed to providing balanced and unbiased information and opinions through the events we run and become involved in.

Merry Christmas from LIRA

LIRA wishes all our members a merry christmas and happy new year!

It’s been an exciting year for LIRA and we’re looking to make it even better in 2010. We’re planning more speakers, debates, trivia nights, model united nations and other social events. Plus we’re planning to be out in force during O-Week so you will definitely see us around.

As always, we want to get your input so feel free to contact us and tell us what you think of our events and how we’re doing. We welcome constructive criticism as well.

Got an idea for an event but need a hand getting it going? Get in touch or come to our general meetings next year which will be announced in our newsletter.

2009 Annual Dinner

Politics and International Relations Dinner 2009The annual Politics and International Relations Faculty dinner is a fantastic way of rounding off the year when the faculty and students can get together and socialise. On the 25th of November over 130 students, staff and alumni gathered at the Agean restaurant on Brunswick St to eat, drink and be merry. Well known Melbourne political comedian Rod Quantock provided the evening’s entertainment.

This was the first time LIRA has run the event and it was a huge success and we hope to make it even better next year. Our thanks to all the staff and students who showed up and made the night so special.

His comedy shows have been recognised by many from all sides of politics as revealing and highly amuzing. His addition to the night will be sure to bring much laughter and discussion.

Just a quick reminder that LIRA is offering refunds for the AIIA Careers Conference. Please be sure to email us by the end of the week if you attended.

However, more to the point LIRA is able to offer LIRA members who attended the AIIA Careers Conference a refund for the cost of their tickets. If you attended and are not a LIRA member, either join the facebook group or if you are not a facebook person, send us an email to join the email list (which you would already be on if you are getting this newsletter). We first tried to get a list of those attending from AIIA, but due to privacy issues this proved difficult.

Please get in contact with us ASAP so we can arrange for you to receive your cash. Let any of your friends know that went to that conference that this is an option for them too.

The Islamic World: between Europe and the United States

LIRA has also been allocated a small number of tickets to an exclusive discussion to coincide with the Special issue of the ‘International Politics’ Journal. The topic of the issue is ‘The Islamic World: between Europe and the United States’. The discussion will be hosted by the Centre for Dialogue and will feature Prof Farish Ahmad Noor, Prof Joe Camilleri, A/Prof Shahram Akbazardadeh and A/Prof Nick Bisley.

This event will take place on Tuesday 27 October from 5:30 – 7pm and will be held at the University of Melbourne. If you are interested in attending this event then please send an expression of interest to Raphael

It promises to be a fascinating and engaging insight into a significant global issue!

Mini-Model United Nations at La Trobe

As many of you will know, LIRA sent a delegation of 25 members to the week long 2009 Asia Pacific Model United Nations Conference, held in Brisbane, earlier this year. It was a great experience and all who participated had a great time while also learning a great deal about their committee’s topics.

LIRA is proud to be able to bring that experience to La Trobe. We will be hosting our very own Model United Nations Conference shortly after the exam period and we invite you to attend. The event will be a single day event and will be held on the 2nd of December.

This conference will be an excellent chance for La Trobe students to practice and learn the art of diplomacy and it promises to be a lot of fun to boot. LIRA is currently taking expressions of interest so we can determine the size and number of committees that we will have on the day. If this event sounds like the kind of thing that you would be interested in then please contact Raphael so that we can then send you further details about the topics and committees that will be on offer.

MDG Conference: Volunteers wanted

For those interested in the MDG and development more broadly, there is a great conference coming up at La Trobe on the 30th Nov. – 1st Dec. It is co-sponsored by AusAid and a host of other important development organisations and is a great opportunity to engage with the sector and see what it is all about.

However, it costs money and while the fee is greatly reduced for students from $330 to only $110, and it promises to be a great program of many fantastic speakers (to be opened by the Hon. Bob McMullen), it is still money many students don’t have. As such, there are a few volunteering opportunities available. If you are interested, then contact Kajute and he will get in contact with you. Go to http://www.latrobe.edu.au/humansecurity/MDGconference.html for more info.

AIIA International Careers Conference

This years AIIA Careers Conference was a another great event with many organisations, companies and government agencies represented.

I found that talking with people who work in the “industry” to be a great opportunity to ask some questions that my lectures and tutors perhaps cannot answer. It gave me insight into the organisations and even some of the competing politics between companies (those for-profit), NGO’s and government agencies such as DFAT and ASIO.
